Learn about and support organizations that strengthen democracy

There are thousands of organizations, big and small, all over the country, helping to protect the nation and the people who live here. Some file lawsuits, some help register voters, some raise money for candidates or help candidates run - there are all kinds of groups helping in all kinds of ways.

One way you can get involved is by donating money or volunteering your time with organizations that strengthen democracy.

I've added organizations I think are doing good things - but there are so many more. You can search the internet for local or national organizations working on the issues that matter most to you.

The States Project funnels donations to state lawmakers who are committed to improving people's lives.

What they do

The States Project focuses on winning governing majorities in the states by making state legislative campaigns more effective and better-funded. They also provide nonpartisan tools and resources that connect a diverse community of state lawmakers committed to improving lives for the people they serve.

Why I support them

We all hear about fundraising for people running for president, but we hear a lot less about people running for state legislatures. But a lot of the laws and policies that affect our day-to-day lives are state policies: Wage and employment laws. Abortion access. Education. Gun safety. Clean air and water.

The States Project focuses on the people making THOSE laws - state laws - and finding candidates who support education and worker protections and getting them elected.

Plus, state candidates are a great investment: as The States Project points out, A state legislative campaign usually costs less than 3% of a competitive U.S. Senate race, which means your donations go further in state legislative races.
