Paramount has agreed to pause its merger with Warner Bros., putting the $110 billion blockbuster acquisition on hold until next year.

The lawsuit, filed in the San Francisco-seated U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, brings together 12 states led by Democratic attorneys general. It alleges the merger violates a section of the Clayton Act that bars mergers that substantially lessen competition or create a monopoly.

The Writers Guild of America also filed a similar lawsuit seeking to block the merger on antitrust grounds.
